With over 30 years of trekking experience, Imtiyaz Gagal  is more than just a seasoned trekker—he’s a living chronicle of Kashmir’s most breathtaking trails. From the alpine meadows of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek to the serene waters of Tarsar Marsar, and the mystical beauty of Gangbal Lake, Imtiyaz has not only walked these routes—he’s come to know them like the lines on his hands.

Imtiyaz began trekking in the early '90s, when Kashmir's trails were largely untouched by tourism. Back then, every journey was a true expedition. Navigation meant reading the sky, listening to the wind, and learning from nomads and shepherds who knew the high mountains like kin. Over the decades, he has witnessed the transformation of Kashmir’s trekking culture—from hidden local trails to global adventure destinations.

Among his favorite journeys is the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek, a majestic route that winds through a chain of alpine lakes like Vishansar, Krishansar, Gadsar, Satsar, and Gangbal. For Imtiyaz, each lake is more than a scenic spot—it’s a chapter of lived experience: braving sudden snowfalls, spotting Himalayan wildlife, and guiding groups through narrow ridges and lush valleys.

Another personal favorite is the Tarsar Marsar Lake Trek. For Imtiyaz, the twin lakes are wrapped in both natural beauty and folklore. He recalls leading groups through the tranquil Aru Valley, navigating forests, river crossings, and flower-filled meadows before reaching the mirror-like surfaces of Tarsar and Marsar—surreal, remote, and deeply spiritual.

And then there’s Gangbal Lake, sitting in the shadow of Mount Harmukh. This trek, Imtiyaz says, has a soul of its own. He has returned here dozens of times—sometimes guiding, sometimes just to be with the silence of the mountains. Gangbal, to him, is not just a destination, but a place of reflection and renewal.
